Interactive dynamic solver & simulator for the chest slider puzzles

How it works

Orientation

In-game, the metal plates stack toward you. Gate 1 is the plate furthest away; the highest gate number is the front plate where the lockpick enters. This tool lists gates top to bottom in that same order.

On each plate, holes 1–7 run left to right along the top row — match the numbers when setting start and target pins.

Gothic lock plates numbered 1 through 6 from back to front, with holes 1 through 7 labeled left to right on the rearmost plate
Gate numbers (1 = back) and hole numbers (1 = left) as shown in-game.

Holes (1–7)

Each gate has seven holes, left to right. Pick where the pin starts and where it must end up.

  • Start pin — left-click a hole (gold inner ring) Start pin — select Start mode, then tap a hole (gold inner ring)
  • Target pin — right-click a hole (green outer ring). New gates default to hole 4. Target pin — select Target mode, then tap a hole (green outer ring). New gates default to hole 4.

Link grid

Next to each gate is a small grid. Each column is another gate number. Click a cell to cycle the link type when this gate moves:

  • · None — no effect on that gate
  • S Same (S) — linked gate moves the same direction
  • O Opposite (O) — linked gate moves the other way

Gothic Remake Chest Locations & Lockpicking Walkthroughs

1. Mountain Fortress Focus Stone Chest

Located on an isolated ledge across a broken bridge in the Mountain Fortress. To reach this chest, players must use a Bloodfly Transformation Scroll to fly across the gap. The chest lock consists of 6 interlinked plates. You can click the "Mountain Fortress Chest" quick preset button above to instantly load its default lockpicking combination and calculate the optimal, edge-safe path.

2. Arlin's Prison Cell Gate Lock (Bar the Truth Quest)

During the quest "Bar the Truth", you must free a bandit named Arlin from the Old Camp dungeons. Bypassing the guard's key, you can pick the dungeon cell gate directly. This lock has 5 interlinked plates. Tap the "Arlin's Cell Gate" preset above to pre-populate this exact puzzle and calculate a controller-friendly solution with the minimum number of plate switches.

Lockpicking Durability & Training

If you struggle with breaking lockpicks, it is highly recommended to seek training from Fingers in the Old Camp. Training the Lockpicking skill reduces the number of linked plates on chest locks and increases your pick's durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the coupling directions?
Turn a plate in-game. If Plate 1 moves Right, and Plate 3 also slides Right, the coupling 1 → 3 is 'Same'. If Plate 3 slides Left, it is 'Opposite'. If it does not budge, set it to 'No Effect'.
Why does the lock picker snap my picks?
Each plate pin has 7 slots. If you force a plate beyond Slot 1 or Slot 7, it hits the frame. Doing this repeatedly breaks your pick. Our solver guarantees an 'Edge-Safe' path that never snaps lockpicks.
Which mode should I choose?
'Controller-friendly' is highly recommended as it minimizes switching active plates, which is the most tedious action on gamepad/keyboard. 'Shortest solution' strictly minimizes total turns.
